Not only was Francis Loring a fine musician with a beautiful voice but he was also a poet and translater of Schubert's Winterreise.
His poem, Cockatoo, was written for his daughter after her cockatiel flew up into the blue sky to never return.
cockatoo, cockatoo
through my window in you flew
made a dream of mine come true
stay with me, stay with me
laugh and chatter, play with me
and I will love thee faithfully
beady eye, beady eye
freely will I let thee fly
and guard thee truly till I die
cock-a-two, cock-a-three
lay a little egg for me
raise a cock-a-family
fluffy little cock-a-chicks
I will teach them all the tricks
turn them into clever dicks
have a little cock-a-farm
filled with all your cock-a-charm
cockatoo, cockatoo
stay with me for I love you
cockatoo, cockatoo
